Il luogo: è a pochi passi dal Naviglio Grande, una delle zone più animate e divertenti di Milano, piena di locali di ogni tipo. E anche una delle più autentiche, con case annose che raccontano di una città ormai scomparsa. Via Argelati, poi, offre alcuni degli angoli più caratteristici, con qualche roggia ancora a ciel aperto e le rane che d'estate danno concerto (sì, a Milano, incredibile, no?) tra case basse e ponticelli. Era così anche la nostra prima sede.... ma, ci viene da piangere, la casa è andata giù, abbattuta per far posto a nuovi condomini, lasciamo perdere.
(Location: is a short walk from the Naviglio Grande, one of the most lively and entertaining of Milan, filled with bars of all kinds. And one of the most authentic, with long-standing homes that tell of a city that has now disappeared. Via Argelati, then, offers some of the most beautiful places, with some still open ditch and frogs that give summer concert (yes, in Milan, unbelievable, no?) between low houses and bridges. It was so also our first home .... but we want to cry, the house has gone down, demolished to make way for new condominiums, forget it.)
La cucina: ecco, andiamo al sodo. Rispecchia le due anime gemelle del locale: ligure e istriana, con qualche tocco (abbondante, direi) di internazionalità. Specialità assoluta: trenette al pesto, fatte (scusate l'immodestia) da Dio (non da lui in persona, voglio dire fatte molto, ma molto bene).
(The kitchen here, let's cut to the chase. Reflects the two kindred spirits of the place: Liguria and Istria, with a touch (plenty, I would say) of internationality. Specialty absolute trenette al pesto, made (pardon the immodesty) by God (not by him in person, I mean made very, very good).)
Lo staff: un cinema. C'è Andrea, chef-patron, che non sa se gli piace più mangiare, suonare la chitarra, bere il whisky, cantare o... Fa tutte queste cose, ma, tranquilli, al momento giusto va anche in cucina e lavora per fortuna. C'è la sua compagna e socia Anita, idem come sopra salvo che lei non suona la chitarra. E non va in cucina ma si aggira tra i tavoli e sorride (prende anche le ordinazioni).
(The staff at a cinema. There's Andrea, chef-owner, who does not know if he likes to eat, playing guitar, drinking whiskey, singing o. .. Does all these things, but, rest assured, at the right time to be in the kitchen and works luckily. There is his companion and partner Anita, as above except that she plays the guitar. It does not go into the kitchen, but wanders among the tables and smiles (even taking orders).)
L'atmosfera: se è possibile, è ancora meglio della cucina. Cioè, qui si viene perchè si mangia bene, sicuramente, ma anche perchè si viene accolti con un sorriso (anche due o tre, eh!) e poi coccolati e poi anche divertiti, a volte fino alle lacrime, se arrivano due o tre amici "giusti" e cominciano con le loro barzellette o con le vecchie filastrocche e canzoni in milanese. Alcuni hanno un'irresistibile propensione per gli scherzi: ma per fortuna se li fanno tra di loro, gli altri ridono e basta.
(The atmosphere, if possible, is even better in the kitchen. I mean, here it is because the food is good, certainly, but also because it is greeted with a smile (even two or three, eh!) and then fondled and then some real fun, sometimes to tears, if there's two or three friends "right" and start with their jokes or the old nursery rhymes and songs in Milan. Some people have an irresistible propensity for jokes, but thankfully if you are among them, the others laugh and that's it.)
I prezzi: vi sorprenderanno. Positivamente. Perchè si spende pochissimo, la sera si spende meno che altrove e si ha moooolto, ma moooolto di più.
